Welcome to the site of the 29th International Conference on the History of Cartography 2022 – ICHC 2022. The Conference will take place in Bucharest, Romania, in 4- 8 July 2022.

Given due consideration to the COVID-19 pandemic, the local Bucharest organizers and Imago Mundi Ltd. have decided to reschedule the Congress for 4 – 8 July 2022. Hopefully, by the summer of 2022 the Covid pandemic will largely wear off, allowing us to organize an in-person congress.
As for the participants whose abstracts have been accepted by the scientific committee of the ICHC, we hope that the one-year postponement will not hinder intentions to attend the Bucharest congress. We kindly ask you to send us a provisional confirmation of acceptance and attendance, before the 1st of May 2021.
We will open registration in February 2022 and we hope to publish the preliminary program of the conference around the same time.

The conference is being organized by the National Museum of Maps and Old Books in Bucharest and the University of Bucharest, in collaboration with Imago Mundi Ltd. The main venue will be Aula Magna of the Central University Library “Carol I” of Bucharest, with some sessions to be held in the amphitheaters of the Faculty of History, University of Bucharest. Both venues are located close to Bucharest’s historical centre. The conferences will be accompanied by a suite of map exhibitions showcasing the collections of several Bucharest institutions.

The main conference theme, ‘Conflict and Cartography’, aims to explore the intricate conflictual content of mapping and mapmaking in fields such as war, politics, ideology, cultural or intellectual history. The themes of the conference are (1) Imperial and Anti-Imperial Cartographies, (2) Frontier Cartographies, (3) Cartographies of Nostalgia and Imagination, (4) Cartographies of Difference and Map Consumption.

As always, papers on any other aspect of the history of cartography will be also considered.

The official language of the conference will be English, and all abstracts and presentations must be in that language. There will be no simultaneous translation.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Bucharest in 2022!
